Tongue reduction surgery is not an operation that plastic surgeons are very interested in. In fact, it is a surgery that has a lot of both pediatric and adult patients. In children and infants, the cause is usually a congenital tongue that is too large. The child cannot keep his tongue in his mouth while speaking, half of the tongue is out. He speaks by biting his tongue while speaking. Speech improves after a while. Adult patients are often referred to plastic surgeons by orthodontists. The patient applies to an orthodontist due to a disorder in the structure of the teeth and jaw. The orthodontist says that the reason for these problems is the size of the tongue and directs the patient to a plastic surgeon. Before starting orthodontic treatment, the tongue is surgically reduced.

Too large a tongue may not always be congenital. Sometimes, the tongue may enlarge later on in patients who receive speech therapy due to slurred speech. We have had such patients. Sometimes, this surgery may need to be done urgently in newborn babies. If the baby's tongue is excessively large, it can make it difficult for him to breathe and feed. In this case, the newborn's tongue may need to be reduced urgently. In this case, the operation is of course risky, but it must be done urgently. In order for the baby to be able to feed and breathe, all risks must be taken into consideration. In adult patients, there is almost no risk.
The surgery is performed with general anesthesia. It finishes in about 1 hour. The patient is hospitalized for one night. Since it takes longer to start feeding in pediatric patients, they are sometimes hospitalized for 2 nights. It is an operation with a very low probability of complications and a very high satisfaction rate. I think there is only one trick, and that is not to reduce the tongue excessively in the surgery. An experienced surgeon will plan the operation properly and reduce the tongue as necessary. It shortens the length of the tongue as necessary and narrows the width as necessary.
